Art Challenge:  Doodles & Mark as a Layer Element
Journal Prompt:  Surviving the Elements

I posted this photo on Instagram and started a conversation about what you are doing in art that is scary.

This is scary to me. I am painting faces and I don't do that. I mixed my own skin tones (Lorraine - did you read that?!) I played with shadow and light and made progress but admit that I still don't completely "get it". So this is Stinkin' Scary!

Ok, back to our challenge - they are related - hang with me.

I started with loosely doodled tropical plants. I love this kind of drawing. I am working on embracing this style because I stop and stare at it every time I see it. I can do that. So DO IT.

I smeared Dylusions Ink (in a waterbrush) onto the page. No thought to "staying in the lines" or coloring in completely. This is about loose and imperfect.

Then I made a wash from Dina Wakley acrylic paint and water - probably 50/50. I brushed it on wanting brush marks. I am thinking about grasscloth wallpaper. I want texture.

I sketched a face and got ready to paint.

A form is starting to appear.

Here she is finished - I added a bit of Prismacolor pencil to her to deepen colors or add a highlight.

A scratchy frame was added and I journaled around the frame about pushing into scary territory.

Where do you need a push?
